As Tasmanian as it comes

  • Unexpectedly Quirky

This is not your average cottage….

The unlikely marriage of old and new; low rising, crooked doorways and old doors set within new. The last Postmaster’s charcoal drawings c. 1940s clinging to crumbling 1800s lathe and plaster walls. An expanse of modern brass set against 184 year old rafters as a kitchen. You won’t see rooms like this every day.

  • Unapologetically Authentic

The Post House restoration has conserved and boldly exposed the original colonial elements that make it so unique; throughout you can see components of the distinctive primitive split slab construction method. Hand cut shingles can be viewed from the dining table. But don’t worry, ducted heating and cooling will ensure you can take in glimpses of yesteryear immersed in the comforts of modern life.

View through manhole in ceiling to exposed original shingles and roof structure of 1840s cottage . Post House on Carlton river.
  • A Resilient Survivor

The Post House itself is a testament to resilience, having survived since 1842 and withstood periods of neglect and abandonment, whilst simultaneously weathering the unpredictable forces of nature. That she still stands today at all is nothing short of remarkable. She has persisted quietly through some very hard times and the redemption arc of her story has finally arrived. Let her inspire you. If she can rise from her worst days to her best, maybe you can too.

Our Story

We fell in love with the Post House on our very first visit. Despite the fact that she was basically an illegal ruin… Maybe even a little more so because of that? From that moment on, we were all in. We were going to do what it took. Fast forward one love letter, one protracted & complex planning process, the incredible support of one Heritage grant and more dollars than we care to admit or even had to spend…

We’ve done it. We’ve made an honest woman out of her. Her redemption arc is complete. And she is ready to be shared.

With one bedroom, two adaptable living spaces, ducted heating, brand new kitchen and bathroom and two wood heaters, your stay is guaranteed to be comfortable.
